Strollers, School Board and Childcare- Oh My!

May 6, 2012

Tuesday, April10th, the SF Board of Supervisors unanimously passed a resolution which urges the SF Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) to adopt a policy that permits children in baby strollers to ride MUNI (for safety purposes, wheels of the stroller should be locked and the stroller secured). The resolution further calls on SFMTA to adopt a policy that gives parents and caregivers with children second priority, to the elderly and handicapped, to the reserved seating onMuni.

For those of you who have tried (perhaps unsuccessfully) to take a stroller on MUNI, you understand the need for this new policy. A big thanks to President Chiu for his leadership as well as his partnership with us in crafting this resolution.  We also want to thank Supervisor Sean Elsbernd for co-sponsoring, and the entire Board of Supervisors for their unanimous support of the resolution. Members of the Parent PAC have already begun work with the MTA in creating this new family friendly policy, so stay tuned for more information on when you can expect to experience a difference when taking your stroller on the bus.

2012 will be a big year for us!  The PAC is watching the list of candidates running for Board of Education closely and looks forward to deciding on four outstanding ones to endorse.  In addition, a childcare facility at the Transbay Terminal project is on our radar.  Since we know that 50 percent of San Francisco families who need childcare cannot access it, the Parent PAC feels that childcare should be a priority at that future facility as well as others. We have begun meeting with childcare experts in the City to figure out where our efforts are needed most.

Please join our effort to make San Francisco more family friendly! You can become a member of the SF Parent Political Action Committee for $25/year or $100/lifetime. Would you like to donate your time and work with us on any of the forementioned projects? Contact

Here’s to a great 2012!
